Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with a few trying for the low.
