Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting array of betting options and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
